Now that you’re stuck, here’s how to clean that closet…..

Oh my…..time to really hunker down…..

So, I’m for SURE headed into my own closet this week. If I’ve learned ANYTHING from doing this job, it is this:

EXCESS IS TOO MUCH – literally and figuratively.

When I see people’s closets and when I see my OWN closet, I really see how having too much makes getting dressed difficult, for one, but it also just doesn’t FEEL GOOD. There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell we have enough places to go in all the stuff in our closet – it’s impossible! Cleaning out and having LESS is so gratifyling and makes life just so much easier.

Take this week to see what I’m talking about. Take a good, hard look at all the S#@T in your closet and REALLY ask yourself, “Where Am I Going In All This?” I’m telling you, the answer is NO WHERE. You’re better off keeping the things that you DO wear and things you actually have a place to GO in rather than keeping a collection of items just because….because you MIGHT wear it or because it MIGHT fit next year…..

Here’s what I do with my clients:

1) Take everything OUT of the closet so you can get a good look at each piece

2) If it is not a HELL YES, then it is a NO…really…it’s a NO

3) Listen to your gut. If you know you’re not going to wear it, be honest with yourself and toss it.

4) Not to quote Mari Kondo, but if you see an item and it “sparks joy”, then keep it! It’s amazing the reaction you have when you see something you REALLY love. Sometimes I find myself smiling over a certain dress or a pair of shoes because I really love it. That’s when you KEEP it – believe me, you’ll know.

5) Staples – no two people have the same “STAPLES”. Just because fashion blogs tell you that you need a white shirt, a black sweater, a trench coat, a black blazer and skinny jeans doesn’t mean you have to go out and spend a FORTUNE on those items and then keep them for a lifetime! I don’t consider ANY of those “STAPLES” in MY wardrobe. Therefore, I do not hold on to items like that “just because I should”. Look at the things you wear everyday and notice that THOSE are your staples.

6) What are you buying this year? Last year’s summer dress…..you wore it a bunch and you loved it. Are you going to continue to wear it this year, or are you planning to buy something new? Chances are, you want a NEW dress. What makes you think you’re going to wear the OLD dress, when all you REALLY want to do is wear the NEW one?

7) Keep a bag or basket in your closet so that ANY time you put on an item and then take it OFF because you don’t like it at that moment – in the basket it GOES. It’s now in your “give away” basket and it STAYS THERE. Just promise me you’ll never go “shopping’“ in your giveaway basket 🙂

8) Last but not least…..seriously…if you have not worn it in two years (some stylists aren’t this generous) then it’s time – time to say adios.

Ok, well that’s it for now – my preaching is over. But, in the next two weeks, there’s really no excuse NOT to tackle the closet – there really isn’t. If you’ve got questions and you need someone to say, “NO!” to something….well, call me ;0

PPS – I can’t help myself. This VB blazer is like BUTTA – so soft. If you don’t like the price tag, well, then here’s another option. I think this blazer with a white tank and white jeans would be SO cute for spring….if ever you leave your house ;0
